Raclette calculator: cheese and potatoes per person
Updated: 1 November 2026
How it works: set the number of guests (1 to 30), pick 200, 225 or 250 g of cheese per person, and choose slices in small pans or scraping from a half wheel. The calculator gives cheese, Gschwellti (Swiss German for potatoes boiled in their skins) and sides in grams; for a half wheel it adds 300 g of cheese in total [1].
The three cheese amounts cover the range given by Swissmilk and Raclette Suisse, with 225 g in the middle [1][2]. You can print the list. Where the figures come from is explained in the guide Raclette: how much cheese and how many potatoes per person?.
Amounts per person
| What | Amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Raclette cheese | 200–250 g per person | [1][2] |
| Potatoes (Gschwellti) | same weight as the cheese: 200–250 g per person | [1][2] |
| Other sides (gherkins, silverskin onions etc.) | 150–200 g per person in total | [1] |
| Cheese scraped from a half wheel | 300 g of cheese more in total | [1] |
Shopping rule of thumb: for 4 people that means 800 g to 1 kg of cheese and the same weight of potatoes.

Includes the 300 g allowance for scraping from a half wheel [1].
Worked examples
Calculation based on [1], at 225 g per person (middle of the range):
| People | Cheese (slices) | Cheese (from a half wheel, +300 g) | Potatoes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | approx. 900 g | – (hardly worth it) | approx. 900 g |
| 6 | approx. 1.35 kg | approx. 1.65 kg | approx. 1.35 kg |
| 10 | approx. 2.25 kg | approx. 2.55 kg (≈ half an AOP wheel, 2.3–2.9 kg) | approx. 2.25 kg |
"Hardly worth it" is an editorial assessment.
A half wheel for scraping: how many people does it feed?
According to its official specification (2026 version, art. 3), a wheel of Raclette du Valais AOP (German: Walliser Raclette AOP) measures 29 to 32 cm across, is 6 to 8 cm high and weighs 4.6 to 5.8 kg [3]. A round half wheel, such as the one Seiler Käse supplies with its rental ovens, weighs about 2.7 kg [4]. That gives:
Calculation (not from a source): half wheel 2.3 to 2.9 kg − 300 g allowance = 2.0 to 2.6 kg of edible cheese. At 250 g per person that feeds 8 to 10 people; at 200 g, 10 to 13 people. With a typical 2.7 kg half wheel it is 9 people (250 g) or 12 people (200 g).
